Ignorance of law means the lack of knowledge about law. Ignorance of the
law does not justify an act, since every person is presumed to know the law
of the land.
‘Ignorance of law is no excuse’ is a time honored maxim of Roman Law
and it means that the effect of a law purporting to create a right or
impose an obligation cannot be frustrated, or evaded on the plea of its
ignorance. It does not mean, that when a law of procedure itself provides
that a breach of its provision is excusable, on proof of a sufficient cause
of such a breach, ignorance of law cannot be considered as a sufficient
cause. ….. [M/s. Rahman Huq & Co. vs. Commissioner of Income Tax (1975)
27 DLR 403]
